Find your way around

The main window is built around a session. Most of the space belongs to MUD output; the command input sits below it. A toolbar across the top opens the other parts of smudgy.

Output pane

The MUD's text appears here. Scroll upward to read earlier lines. New output continues to arrive while you are reading.

Command input

Type a command and press Enter to send it. Up and Down recall earlier commands; Tab completes a word from recent output and suggestions supplied by scripts. See [[dev:manual:playing:command-input|Enter commands efficiently]].

Pane header

A pane can contain terminal output, a map, or a script-created widget. Pane headers may be hidden until the toolbar is expanded; this is controlled in Settings.

Connect opens the saved server and profile list. Use it to start another session, edit connection details, or open a profile offline.

Automations opens the aliases, triggers, hotkeys, modules, and packages for the current server. It is available after a profile has been opened, even offline.

Map Editor opens the full map editing window for the current server. The map shown in a playing pane is for navigation; the editor is for changing the map.

Settings controls application-wide appearance, input, logging, account, security, and social features.

On a narrow window, the toolbar collapses to the menu button. The same actions remain available there.

Some MUDs send links through a telnet protocol. A link may open a web page or propose a command. Read the confirmation text before allowing a server-supplied link to send anything, particularly when it requests a lasting permission.

Automations and maps are stored for a server and shared by every profile under that server. The session that opened the window still matters for live status, script errors, and the current map location. If you opened a tool from the wrong MUD, close it and reopen it from a session on the intended server.
